What is variant coding? And how to do on Mercedes S55 ESP?

Purpose: ESP module variant coding with Star diagnostic

Vehicle:2002 Mercedes w220 s55

Problem: I get a code under ESP module saying C1511-005 Coding Error Variant Coding is incorrect

Reply:

The variant coding in question is set by using factory data. That factory data is basically what chassis that engine control unit is bolted to. Things like weight of the car, yaw sensor and acceleration sensor parameters, moment arms, etc etc.

Once the engine control unit “learns” its variant coding, it is permanently and irrevocably locked down.

The ESP module reads the variant coding from the ECU. Once read, its ” soft” locked.

Your trouble code suggests that the ESP module has a variant coding that differs from that of the ECU.

Is this a recent occurrence? Did you perhaps have an third party ECU tune performed? Was the ESP module replaced ? Is the trouble code stored or current ?

Using STAR you can go into the ESP and check the currency of the error code and determine if it was 9 years ago or last Tuesday. If it was a long ago and a stored code, I would clear it and move on. If it is current, you can force a variant locking reset of the ESP module in STAR diagnostic and see if the code returns. If the trouble code returns, that would make it a current and ongoing error. If that turns out to be the case then perhaps the ESP module has gone “breasts skyward”.

1. to the right it should say CURRENT or STORED

hit F8

It should show you how many time the car has ben started after the code was detected. “0” means the fault is CURRENT, any number greater than 0 the fault should be STORED and past history. The ( obviously ) higher the number of start cycles the longer ago it was.

2. Double click C1511-005

Read the pre conditions

read the sequence and follow it to (hopefully) force a variant coding re-read/write.

It would seem that the ESP reads the ECU on every start up. Having a bad TCU MAY be contributing to the ECU variant coding being off kilter. I would think there would be some P2000-P2564 series codes displayed for that though.

The most important note: When you get into adaptation it shows 000000 zeros on the vin number section and ask you to enter vin to match it. tried but no success.

How to solve:

Bear in mind I am using Xentry-Sim.

First stab in the dark, try F7 ( Perform Synchronization ) In other words.. ” go fetch me the VIN from the ECU ”

If that is successful ( something other than 0’s displayed) , then F5 ( confirmation of the VIN ).

If not successful, try entering VIN as it appears normally, then F5

If that doesn’t work try entering as internal FIN, 2201751Axxxxxx where xxxxxx is your chassis serial from Normal VIN. Then F5.

If none of that works…It maybe time for some of that professional help mentioned earlier up the thread.

Try that and see what happens

I have no training as a MB mech/tech and offer this as just a possible direction to proceed in. The ( very ) highly paid professionals at the Dollarship or the ( not so ) highly paid folks at a good independent shop should/would have the final say.

Review: MB STAR C3 XENTRY/DAS Windows 10

Like many others I had a long, long struggle getting my XENTRY-DAS setup working and thought I would share some of the learning to the forum.

There are many non-factory setups available with prices generally ~$600 for a C3 Multiplexer, cables, Dell 630 (built-in RS232 port), already loaded HDD. I didn’t want to spend that much and shopped on-line acquiring an external USB HDD with 05-2015 software and VMWare loaded. I acquired the Mux from NaHai Tech. Apparently these Multiplexers are Actia derivatives with the same serial number (6511100299), Part D4. I got the RS232 and OBD cables separately from other vendors as well.

I am using a Dell Inspiron 15 laptop with Windows 10.

VMWaredoes nicely run the XENTRY/DAS software on the virtual desktop through the external USB HDD. A variety of keygens are on-line, or through the forums here to get the necessary keys for WIS/EPC/Xentry. (Just having WIS is a blessing!)

Optimistically I connected it all up to the car (2004 W220.170, S430) but did not get the green “Connected” icon in the desk band. Rats. However the SDConnect Toolkit showed the Mux as “Part D” but “no connection”. So at least the computer sees the Mux.

I had read all the caveats on the forums about RS232 cable type, setting COM Port 2, setting low serial bit rate, fake RS232-RS485 modules on the serial cable, and that C3 Part D is unsupported post 09/2014.

I started troubleshooting with the USB RS232 cable and tried one with FTDI and one without. To be certain they were communicating through VMWare I connected each to the serial input of an old IBM w/ serial port and used serial bus comm software to send/receive data from each computer. So I know either cable will work (if sometimes temperamentally). My version of VMWare Workstation (10.0) requires a “Removable Device” (which can be a thumb drive if you want to import data, or the DVD drive, or USB cable) be selected from a “VM” menu drop down. Its imperative that VMWare recognize that you want to disconnect from the host and put a check-mark by the device listing after the dialog comes up asking permission. Likewise when if you switch to the host (ie Win 10 in my case) the device (i.e. USB serial cable) won’t be available unless you disconnect VMWare’s use of it.

So the problem must be in the Mux itself or a cabling issue beyond the serial cable. After much screwing around and getting nowhere I finally contacted the vendor through their AliExpress contact portal. They were quite responsive and helpful. The HDD came with TeamViewer and so one night in the wee hours I setup the system and after several hours (arg!) the Chinese tech operated Teamviewer and evidently changed some Config settings. The green comm light came on the deskband!! Eureka. Short lived. When I restarted VMWare nothing worked again. NaHai said it must be a software problem, to purchase a plug-in HDD from them. With so much time invested I decided to get another C3 Mux and RS232 cable, fromMBStarTool.com this time, the problem must be with one or the other. Shipping was quite fast actually and in a week or so I had the new setup ready. While waiting I investigated the Mux internals for bad solder joints and mapped the pinouts of the serial cable. I’ve worked with RS232 and RS485 in the past and this wiring is non-standard, to my head scratching.

With the newC3 Mux and new RS232 (but theirs comes with a converter box RS232-RS485, and it has internals) I connected it with my VMWare setup and it works! I can operate Xentry and diagnose the problems with my car – and there are several.

I tried the original Mux too and it works fine as well.

Patience pays. The supplier’s directions for setup and operation of this complex system is lacking. And it is, as everyone has commented many times, a very complex set of electronics and software!!! But anyone with an older Benz and limited budget (i.e. why not buy a new Benz if the budget isn’t limited!) will treasure the XENTRY/DAS‘s abilities and save a lot more money in the long run.

—It’s probably because it has a real com port. Most laptops these days have just a USB port and things don’t always work right if you’re using a USB to RS-232 converter. You wouldn’t want to brick a component during an update if you’re using USB. The other option would be to get a C4 system, but then they cost more. I think there are a couple other systems out there like IBM that also have real com ports.

—The PART D mux(C3) is a serial ported mux—that’s the reason for the Dell and IBM older laptops.

Solved MB Star C3 V2015.9 up Mux Initialization Failed

Here is the mbstartool.com engineer solution to MB Star C3 V2015.9 up DAS Xentry multiplexer initialization failed problem.
Error message:

Possible causes:
The link between the diagnosis multiplexer and the diagnostic socket is interrupted.

Problem:
I have DELL D630 with Xentry 09/2015 and MB Star C3 multiplexer. I have connected many cars (W202, W203, W210, W211, W245, etc) and there is no problem with connection – everything is working like a charm. Some days ago, I have bought W204 C280 from 2007. After I choose model, engine and transmission, and I go to diagnostic I see this:
“The diagnosis application is being started…”

and few seconds later this:
“Initialization of the multiplexer has failed”
Initialization of the multiplexer has failed
My Mux is not compatible with W204? I searched few hours without success.
Customer solution:
W204 and X204 is the last Mercedes models which working without some special modifications.
You can try:
First try in toolkit.ini delete line skipcomports=all and set line usecomport=2 then you will see in SDconnect toolkit PartD on display after mux connection.
First save your original file for sure.
Try look into C:\Userdata\Config\Xentry\driver – slave.ini and set there com port which you have used for PartD.
Report:
There was no change because I didn’t restarted system. After restart work perfect.
Your solution work perfectly! Probem solved. Everything is working like a charm.

MB STAR C3 DAS Fault 1.1 initialization failed (fixed)

It helps those Mercedes-Benz Star diagnosis MB STAR C3 users meet Fault (1.1)-1.501.9302 “Initialization of diagnosis multiplexer failed.” when running DAS.

MB STAR C3 software (especially v2016.5, v2016.7) cannot used with network connect; otherwise, it would update patches automatically and result in the error as the photo above displays.

 

If you buy software from http://www.mbstartool.com/ (old domain: .mbstarshop.com/), you need send the software disk (with patches updated) back to copy software for use.

 

But nowadays, the C3 software files has been updated, and can work no issues with network connection.

MB Star C3 RS232 to RS485 cables wiring diagram

Finally, had the RS232 to RS485 converter cable wiring diagram so I managed to resolder the wire contacts that connect to the MB STAR C3 multiplexer side.
The cable I bought from ebay had crappy solder points that only worked for a few times before breaking off, and disconnected from the connector/plug.

I can line up the wires with connector and reference it with the ABCDEFGHI..etc on the multiplexer if I knew which color connect to which pin on the cable connector. Unfortunately there are too many wires loose in there for me use trail and error.

EIA-485 cable usually made with twisted pair (like EIA-422) and may span up to 1200 metres. The recommended arrangement of the wires is as a connected series of point-to-point nodes, a line or bus. Ideally, the two ends of the cable will have a termination resistor connected across the two wires and two powered resistors to bias the lines apart when the lines are not being driven. The value of each termination resistor should be equal to the cable impedance (typically, 120 ohms for twisted pairs).
The pinout, simply put, is that colors connect to the following pins:
Purple – Pin 8
Yellow – Pin 5
Orange – Pin 9 (or Pin 4), on one schematic I looked at they are bridged.Looking at that schematic (I’ll link to it below), purple connects to “G” (which is not the G on the cable because the letters are flipped in the key on the schematic!). It looks like Yellow connects to “R”.
With the help online, I’ve fix the cable.
I’ve tested my cable and it works now. Great!

DAS development transfer data from old ETC unit to new

A Mercedes owner simply made the procedure of transfer data from the old unit to the new unit, using MB Star diagnosis DAS development diagnostic software.

The extra thing have to do is:

Fail experience with NT510 scanner:

– NT510 scanner cannot remove the top rpm limiter on a bmw z4m roadster 2007, performance tuning software is required to remove top speed limiters.
